A review of the non-target effects of fungi used to biologically control plant diseases

چکیده
Biological control agents for plant diseases are currently being examined as alternatives to synthetic pesticides due to their perceived increased level of safety and minimal environmental impacts. Fungal biological control agents have several mechanisms of action that allow them to control pathogens, including mycoparasitism, production of antibiotics or enzymes, competition for nutrients and the induction of plant host defences. While effective in the control of plant diseases, these mechanisms may pose risks to non-target species including mycorrhizal and saprophytic fungi, soil bacteria, plants, insects, aquatic and terrestrial animals, and humans. Non-target effects including mycoparasitism of mycorrhizae, reduction in plant root colonisation by mycorrhizal fungi, disorders in commercial mushrooms and nodulation by Rhizobium spp., and changes in plant growth have been associated with fungal biological control agents, such as Trichoderma spp. Also, the genera Trichoderma and Gliocladium have been linked to respiratory disorders and shellfish toxicity in humans, respectively. Biological control agents, such as Pythium oligandrum, Talaromyces flavus, Coniothyrium minitans and Ampelomyces quisqualis have modes of action which may pose risks to non-target fungi, bacteria, plants and animals. There is need for future research into ecological impacts associated with the release of any biological agent and methods of determining possible non-target effects. Adequate monitoring and the use of molecular techniques to identify and follow the movement of biological control agents are needed to examine and mitigate negative biological impacts. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Toxicity of pesticides to plants and non-target organism: A comprehensive review
Abstract Pesticides are agrochemical used to increase agronomic production and higher economic profit. However, these chemical pesticides could be persistent in soil and water, collective in silt or bio-aggregates in biota relying upon their dissolvability, prompting various kinds of natural contamination. These pesticides have also shown detrimental effects such as phytotoxicity, genotox...
متن کاملA review of phenolic antioxidants isolated from endophytic fungi
Oxidative stress caused by overproduction of free radicals or oxygenated radical species plays a major role in causing many diseases. The findings suggest the use of antioxidants as compounds to control the release of these radicals or directly prevent their formation. Therefore, antioxidants can be used as drugs to reduce or prevent oxidative stress. Herbal medicines are the basis of modern ph...
متن کاملA review on the inhibitory potential of Nigella sativa against pathogenic and toxigenic fungi
Nigella sativa (N. sativa) grows in various parts of the world, particularly in Iran. It has been traditionally used as a folk remedy to treat a number of diseases. The seeds of this plant contain moisture, proteins, carbohydrates, crude fiber, alkaloids, saponins, ash, fixed oils and essential oil. The major components of the essential oil are thymoquinone, p-cymene, trans-anethole, 2-methyl-5...

Objective(s): Garlic (Allium sativum L. family Liliaceae) is well known in Iran and its leaves, flowers, and cloves have been used in traditional medicine for a long time. Research in recent decades has shown widespread pharmacological effects of A. sativum and its organosulfur compounds especially Allicin. Studies carried out on the chemical composition of the plant show that the ...
